How much should you pay someone helping you move?

This includes everything from packing to unpacking and everything in between. A typical 4-bedroom home move will generally take an average of 10 hours to complete, or between 8 and 12 hours. Moving often means having to buy a new home as well, which means paying expensive real estate agent fees and closing costs. In most cases, you won't have to pay extra for packaging materials, as they are usually included in the price.

Asking your friends to help you move can be as difficult as doing it all yourself, but remember that it's OK to ask for help when you need it. Once moving companies pack a truck, in many cases they can be held responsible for the safety of the contents; if a licensed moving company packs a truck that the customer drives, and the customer hits a pothole and something breaks, in some cases carriers could be left paying for the damages. Obviously, you need to delegate tasks when you have friends to help you, but think in terms of leading a team, not commanding a workgroup. That way, instead of being fleeced while you wait, you can pay around €20.00 per hour and even calculating all the other expenses, it's still much cheaper than hiring a moving company.

A big part of kindly asking your friends for help with moving is recognizing that what you're asking is not an easy or fun task. Moving can be extremely stressful, time-consuming, and costly, so you may be inclined to ask your friends to help you with the process. When you ask your friends for help moving, start with the people who could most easily time out of their schedule. You're going to have a lot less success asking for help if you do it via text the night before you need it.

In addition, you are expected to pay an extended transportation fee if the distance between your front door and the moving truck is greater, or even an elevator fee if your hired workers are forced to go up and down many flights of stairs due to the lack of an elevator (or one that doesn't work). Keep your friends' limitations in mind when you ask for help, ask them to help you in any way they can, and turn to professional moving agents for the rest. In the friendship hierarchy, some of your friends will gladly help you move and some won't, it's just the way things go. If your friend says “no” to your request or you come up with a transparently false excuse why they can't help you, don't take it too personally.
